Steve Clevenger: Not Free Speech

I try to stay out of the political debate and just stick to baseball, but I felt like I had to say something about Steve Clevenger’s tweets. For those of you who don’t remember Clevenger, he was a back up catcher for the Cubs in the dark days between 2011-2013 before being traded to the Orioles with Scott Feldman in exchange for Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop, which was an incredible trade for the Cubs even before his comments yesterday.

You can have your opinions on whether or not the Black Lives Matter movement helps things or not, but whatever you do, don’t cross the line like Clevenger did yesterday. For those of you who haven’t seen them, here they are:

Like I said, you can choose to not support the BLM movement, but this is flat out racism. I mean, saying ALL Black Lives Matter protesters should be locked up for protesting (their constitutional right) and calling them animals? That’s racist.  Luckily, the Mariners did the right thing today and suspended him without pay for the rest of the season.

I don’t care if this gets me unfollowed or whatever you want to do, but for all of you “freedom of speech” people out there, you are not protected if you say something like this. Freedom of Speech protects you from prosecution from the government for saying things, it doesn’t give you the right to say racist things with no consequences. If you don’t believe me, read the Constitution for yourselves. And if you think he will get paid because he is “protected”, I can almost guarantee you there is a clause in his contract that states he can be suspended without pay if a situation like this occurs. Almost every employer has this clause, and people have certainly been fired for things like this.

I am so incredibly happy this guy isn’t a Cub anymore.
