The Cubs took game 1 from the Brewers with a 5-2 victory last night, and one of the biggest story lines from the game was the return of Dexter Fowler (pictured above) who hadn’t played since June 18th, and he returned in spectacular fashion. Fowler hit a solo shot to lead off the game, and finished the game 3-4 with a HR, 1b, and 2b, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. He was absolutely fantastic in his return from the DL, and it is great to have him back in the lineup.
Addison Russell, who has been heating up lately, went 2-4 with a triple and a run scored. In his last 15 games he is hitting .339 with 3 homers, 13 RBI and a .371 OBP. It is great to see him swinging the bat well, and since the all-star break he is hitting an even .400 with an OBP of .444.
Jason Hammel provided another solid start, going 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks, and striking out 4. Not outstanding, but certainly good enough. Carl Edwards Jr continued his hot streak, pitching a perfect 6th and striking out 2. Wood and Grimm combined for a perfect 7th and struck out 1 a piece. Then Strop walked 1 in the 8th, but got out without giving up a run before handing the ball off to Rondon for the 9th. He, in turn, walked 1 and struck out 2 in route to his 17th save of the season. Andrew Miller who, amirite?
It was great to see the bullpen pitch a hitless 4 innings to close out the game and maintain their 6.5 game lead in the division. Hammel picked up his 9th win of the season, to bring him to 9-5 with a 3.35 ERA. Let’s hope he continues to pitch well in the 2nd half, unlike his career stats would suggest.
Today, the Cubs take on the Brewers again at 6:10 on WGN as Lackey (7-6, 3.75) tries to get his first post all star break win. He takes on Zach Davies (6-4, 3.79) of the Brewers. Go Cubs!
