7/18 Recap vs. Mets

cropped-cubs_3.gifThe Cubs (56-36) defeated the Mets (49-43) tonight 5-1 behind a stellar performance by Jon Lester. He went 7 2/3 innings, gave up 1 run on 4 hits, walked one, and struck out 3. Also, Lester lowered his ERA to 2.89 and moved up to 10-4 on the season. He was certainly our Player of the Game for the night.

On the offensive end, Baez went 2-4 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Rizzo did the big damage with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 3rd inning. David Ross also collected an RBI on a sac fly, as did Almora on an 8th inning single.

The Cubs now have an 8 game lead in the Central (provided that the Cardinals 7 run lead holds), and a 9 game lead over the Pirates. The Mets, on the other hand, dropped another half game back of the Nationals, and now sit 6.5 back. The game tomorrow pits Jake Arrieta (12-4, 2.68) against Noah “Thor” Syndergaard (9-4, 2.56) at 6:05. If you live out of the Chicago area, the game will be on ESPN. For those in market, you can check it out on CSN.
